As Perth and regional cities expand the outskirts are being sub divided into residential lots.

The removal of paddocks and bushland for housing puts pressure on the environment, especially water catchments and enhancing the development with tree cover. Local governments have placed major emphasis and conditions on the protection and enhancement of these sensitive areas. PALS works alongside local council environmental teams and developers to ensure these areas are planted with additional vegetation local to the area and maintained.

Case Study

Sub division and land development

Fawcett Road
Munster
West Australia

Brief was to implement the Wetland Management Plan which involved removing substantial evasive weeds, car bodies and other material from the wetland. This proved a challenge given the volume of material and the escalating top fees.
The area then was to be revegetated with native trees shrubs and sedges. The project area backs on to a tributary to Lake Coogee.

We used excavators to extract and then windrow all the weeds and Juncus. These windrows then were mulched ensuring no top soil or soil carbon left the project area. This saved in $15-20,000 in cartage and tip fees.

The regermination of the weeds were sprayed, the site was ripped and mounded. PALS has monitored and maintained the project for the past 3 years. Hand over to the local council was successful with no defects.

Dense evasive weeds, foreign material proved a challenge. The site was very wet and timing was critical

Excavators were used to extract the Juncus and other weeds into windrows.

The vegetation was mulched onsite leaving excellent surface to prepare for planting, reducing weed burden retaining the soil carbon onsite and no cartage and tip fees

After 18 months the newly planted vegetation has shown exceptional vigour

Over 24 months many of the trees are over 2m tall with a good species diversity
