Carbon Offset Tree Planting – a tool for bio sequestration

Bio Sequestration is the removal from the atmosphere of CO2 and its storage in vegetation as carbon through the process of photosynthesis. The rate at which trees sequester carbon is influenced by factors such as climate, topography, soil characteristics, species and age composition, and different stages in the forest growth cycle.

Forests and especially commercially planted tree crops provide an ideal method to absorb and store carbon. Profitable trees for both carbon sequestration and commercial timber require management, through professional silviculture practices.

Parameters affecting the trees’ potential growth are directly related to sequestration rates. The amount of carbon sequestered by a forest depends on
  • Site (High rainfall verses low rainfall – good soil versus poor soil, etc);
  • Age of plantation - rotation length;
  • Stocking (density) - stem volume;
  • Management practices; and

Correct tree planting establishment techniques; including land preparation, weed control, quality seedlings and professional on-going silviculture management will provide a vehicle to bio sequestrate the required CO2 offset.
